Few centuries ago there was a place used for coral exportation, for this reason this part of Sardinia is named Porto Corallo. It is situated in south east coast; the nearest village is Villaputzu, it has got 5000 inhabitants. The cost is characterized by an amusing natural environment: a wild habitat with rocky soils, reefs, Mediterranean vegetation, small bays with rocks and stones and nice beaches. The beauty of the cost gets its maximum expression with the beach of Murtas, Porto Tramatzu, Porto Corallino and “Prima Spiaggia” or Prumari. In the peaks of surrounding hills, named Sa Modditzi, there are few towers; they were built in XVII century to fight Saracen invasions. The most important towers are: San Lorenzo, Turri Motta, Porto Corallo and Murtas towers.
In the countryside is possible to visit a lot of archaeological sites. The ruins of two castles, which were built in XII century. The strong connection between Sardinian people and Christianity is the main reason for country church presence. San Giovanni church is in Murerau, while San Nicola is near the foot of the hill “Su Monti de su Casteddu”. It is built in Romanesque style, with one nave: it is the unique church made up of baked bricks. In Villaputzu there is one of the biggest carsick caves of Sardinia: “ Is Angurtidorgius”.
