History

Villaputzu is an important tourist village situated in South East coast of Sardinia. In its territory there are several symbols of the nuragic civilization: ruins of nuraghe are located in its wide countryside. The village was found by Phoenicians and was located in Santa Maria hill: its name is Sarcapos, and today in the hill stays only the acropolis. Because of Arabian invasion, the village was rebuilt in a plain not visible from the sea. There is a neighborhood, named Santa Mariedda, which represents the first place of the new village. It is known that Sardinia for many centuries was under the rules of several people (Spanish, Arabian, etc): the influence of these historical development gets its evidence in many changes of the name of the village. In fact in historical registers Villaputzu was named “Corte di Sancta Victoria de Villapupia”, Villa Pupus, Pupussi, Pupusti, Pupuci, Putzi. Today, the last word “Putzi” is still used in Sardinian language: ”Bidd’ è Putzi” means Villaputzu. In the territory is possible to visit the ruins of two castles too.
